This is a salutory article, picking up on the themes I flagged in my post this morning, about freedom of speech and the perils of Twitter. Does free speech mean we should allow hate speech – and who defines ‘hate speech’? Would you, or I, be comfortable with some of the ‘likes’ mentioned here – and if we are not (as I hope we are not) – does this mean we should not hire people who hit the ‘wrong’ ‘like’ button – or fire those who do?
Is there a difference between screening someone you are thinking of hiring, and firing someone you have already hired, who is competently doing the job you have hired them for, but whose views, you now discover, are objectionable in some way?
It’s a minefield, isn’t it – yet one we have to do our best to clear, if we believe – on the one hand – in the importance of free speech, and – on the other – uphold certain values.
Where do you come down, on this?
