Farewell, Madiba – thank you and bless you.
After a long life of struggle and suffering, of huge achievement not by a saint but by a man who was human and fallible like the rest of us, our icon is at peace at last.
This is a moment of reflection and deep self-examination for all South Africans. Our responsibility for the past, our obligations and commitments to the future, all weigh heavily on us, as we pause to remember, and to give thanks not only for this one man – giant that he is – but for all our heroes.
Mandela speaks to our better selves; to who we would like to be as well as who we are.
There will be time for a wider stock-taking, for a hard look in the national mirror: but first there will be grieving.
