Did I mention snow, the other day – the conspicuous absence of it? Well, cursed are they who celebrate prematurely, for they shall be punished: with 22cm of the stuff, and temperatures around minus 15, minus 25 with the wind chill.
So what do you do, if you’re a hardy South African? Pull on the parka, and go off to work? Yes, well, I did that. But the other thing you do – when you’re back home in the evening – is haul out the photos, and – glass of vino in hand – pore over your pics of Kruger. You know, sunshine, wild animals, the big open skies – that sort of thing.
Never mind that is was raining, half of the time, and decidedly chilly, especially on the back of the open bakkie.
The pics were worth it, don’t you think?
Brilliant photos. Make this Capetonian homesick for Africa.
First, I really like the photos. And the view of the elephants is much less threatening than the one we shared 15 years (egad!) ago – and too nervous to photograph, as I recall.
As to winter, I am tired of it: too many grey days. However, I must temper my angst, as the storms have again left State College in much better shape than most of the northeast quarter of the states and Canada east of the Great Lakes. The deepest we have seen in a single storm is less than 15 cm. As to temperature, we have something in common.
BTW, I find the phrase used during the early exploration of Antarctica is so much more descriptive. We had lows equal to 33 degrees of Frost one night last week and wind chills down to 47.
